Free Summer Activities in Kid Friendly Detroit

Here are some fun, free things to do with kids in the metro Detroit area (west side) from our friend Corrie Cole of Centsable Momma:

The Sprayscape at McClumpha Park in Plymouth Township – A couple of years ago, Plymouth added a sprayscape to the township park. It’s great fun for the kids, and best of all, it’s free! There are several chairs around the sprayscape for parents to sit, as well as several trees where it’s fun to spread blankets and have a picnic, talk, and watch the kids run through the water. There’s also trails for running/bike riding, picnic tables, and a great wooden play structure.

If you have a Bank of America credit card, ATM card, or check, you can get free admission to several museums in the area the first weekend of each month.  In metro Detroit, the Detroit Zoo, the Henry Ford museum, and the Wright Afican-American museum are included.  We love the polar bear exhibit at the zoo the best, since you go through a tunnel underwater and can see the polar bears swimming around.  My boys also like all the cars at the Henry Ford museum.

Each year, Wayne County offers a Mud Day at Hines Park (Nankin Mills area) in Westland. This year it will take place on July 7. They bring in 200 hundred tons of topsoil and 20 thousand gallons of water to create tons of mud for the kids to play in. The Westland Fire Department is there to hose off the muddy kids.

If you are from the area and have a library card, you can pick up Museum Adventure passes for free admission to various museums around the area like the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit Children’s Museum, and the Ford Rouge Factory Tour. It’s first come, first served for the tickets and they are only valid for a week.

Corrie is a mom of 2 young boys, ages 2 and 5. In her spare time, she shares great deals, as well as money saving tips and ways to earn a little extra money on her blog, www.centsablemomma.com. She loves to find free things to do with her boys around town that are both educational and let them run off some steam!
