At the Science Museum of Minnesota last spring, my son played a game of chance with a ‘pirate’ at their “Real Pirates” exhibit.  He won, but the pirate said (in a piratey voice), “Looks like I owe you some money, lad.  But since I’m a pirate, I’m not going to give it to you.”  Which I thought was pretty funny, but my son was very confused.  I think that’s when he realized that pirates really are villains and not heroes.  Sadly for me, this encounter did not dampen his enthusiasm for pirates at the gift shop.
