Planning may not be the most fun part of your New England fall family vacation, but with the fall foliage as popular as it is (yes, it’s legendary), there will be many other “leaf peepers” (as they are lovingly referred to) that inhabit the area during this time. So planning is a necessity.
In these extremely popular areas, you’ll want to make lodging reservations at least several weeks ahead, especially during the weekend days. Columbus Day weekend (Oct 8-10, 2011) is another time in which advanced booking is advised throughout the region.
Fall is also an excellent time to see the New England coastline area – weather is often still warm and beautiful, and the summer crowds are gone. It’s a perfect time to walk the beaches, explore antique shops, specialty boutiques, and get the best table on those dockside patios. You’ll find beautiful fall colors here too, even along the roadways. See our Top 10 New England Fall Family Vacation Activities here.
For some extra fun, get the kids this great book:
Peepers, a wonderful children’s picture book by Eve Bunting, about two boys who come to appreciate the beauties of nature in the fall under the influence of the visiting leaf peepers. James Ransome’s beautiful paintings of autumn in New England complement the text perfectly.
